Join us on Friday evening for “Treasures of the Tallgrass Prairie: A Floral Year in the Flint Hills,” a full-color presentation of over 150 flowers and butterflies photographed in this area.  Learn a wealth of “herbal lore” about the past and present uses of native plants for food and medicine. On Saturday morning, we will take a group hike, identifying plants as we go, and learn about their ingenious tricks for survival and propagation. We’ll also talk
about methods we’re using on Homestead Ranch
to preserve tallgrass prairie habitat. After
lunch, you’ll have free time to do more hiking,
find a quiet place to meditate or write in your
journal, or just take a peaceful nap.

Wear light, comfortable clothing (shorts are not                                recommended) and sturdy walking shoes. Don’t forget                        to bring a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, insect repellant                        and plenty of drinking water that can be easily                                  carried on a hike. You may also want to bring a                                  camera.

Wildflower Walk - June 2007
This was an incredible event on a beautiful day in the Flint Hills!  The women who participated were really excited about the number of flowers they were able to see.  Marva's home-grown PowerPoint presentation of flowers found on the Homestead Ranch was awesome! Marva knows her flowers!

Marva is available to facilitate this event
for groups of 6 or more, day only or overnight.
Call (620.753.3465) or email to find a date of your choosing.

About the Facilitator
Marva Weigelt lives, works and plays on a ranch                                 in the Flint Hills. Her irrepressible curiosity keeps                             her busy poking around to find answers to questions:                          What lived here before me? What was life like a                               hundred years ago? How did these rocks get here?                             How old are they? What’s the name of this flower?                            Why do its petals open and close at specific times of day? Is it edible? How long has the prairie been here? What was here before the grasslands?

Marva believes that creatively engaging with nature and history allows her to find significance in the tiniest details, and in turn, that intricacy provides clues to interconnections among people, ideas and the natural world. She believes that we are all co-creators in a constantly changing universe. Her brain is a very busy place and her heart is full of wonder and joy.

Flowers are words even a baby can understand.
              -  Quentin Crisp
What sunshine is to flowers, smiles are to humanity. These are but trifles, to be sure; but, scattered along life's pathway, the good they do is inconceivable.

- Joseph Addison (1672 - 1719)
The earth laughs in flowers.
               -  e. e. cummings
Flowers always make people better, happier, and more helpful; they are sunshine, food and medicine for the soul.
