We shouldn't teach great books; we should teach a love of reading.

Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert
The story of a woman's  year-long journey in search of herself.  Eating her way through Italy, finding meaning in prayer in India, combining the worldly and spiritual in Indonesia, Gilbert's story is thought-provoking.  Oprah had an audience full of women who had read this book one day.  The stories of women who changed their lives because of this book was incredible!

The Dance of the Dissident Daughter:A Woman's Journey from Christian Tradition to the Sacred Feminine
by Sue Monk Kidd
This is one woman's courageous story of her spiritual journey from the bounds of patriarchal religion to the freedom to experience faith in a way meaningful to her.  This is her story and not every woman's story, but it is a story many of us can find touchstones of understanding - and hope.

The Red Book: A Deliciously Unorthodox approach to Igniting Your Divine Spark by Sera Beak
Beak frankly admits she wrote this book for women in the 20-30 year age range.  Women 40+ are finding the book meaningful. Beak criticizes the patriarchal interpretation that has dominated most belief systems for centuries, and then quickly moves on to create her own feminist one.  A fresh look at spirituality through the eyes of a world religion scholar.
Four books have been chosen for 2008 for women to read and come together to discuss.  All are "woman-friendly," written by women, for women about life, faith, spiritual growth, friendship and more.  Read one, two, or all 4 and come discuss your experience of reading with others.

There will be time during the day to stroll to the creek, walk the , labyrinth, and find other ways to enjoy your day in the country.
You know you've read a good book when you turn the last page and feel a little as if you have lost a friend.
- Paul Sweeney
A well-composed book is a magic carpet on which we are wafted to a world that we cannot enter in any other way.

Annie Freeman's Fabulous Traveling Funeral
by Kris Radish
Annie passes away at the youthful age of 56, leaving her high-school friend, Katherine, responsible for organizing her traveling funeral. Katherine receives a UPS package with Annie's favorite pair of red high-top sneakers, which contain her ashes, and instructions to contact four other women who played pivotal roles in her life. All of the women either have met or heard of each other through Annie, and all agree to fulfill her request that they fly across the country together and disperse her ashes at places meaningful to Annie.
