Class on Personal Safety
Gather the Women

September 8, 2008
Mon 9:30am - 3:30pm
Fee: $36, includes lunch
Facilitator: MaryAnne Thurber

"Don't learn safety rules simply by accident."   -- Anonymous

The practical information participants are exposed to can be used in everyday living, helping women be models of safety for others in their world.  This retreat will be a time to help women integrate personal and environmental awareness into their everyday lives and to recognize that their informed choices are the most effective type of self-defense.

We will take some time to pull inward and examine past experiences and assumptions.  This will be our foundation for becoming aware of the "feeling" response so many of us have . . . and too often choose to ignore . . . as in "I knew something wasn't right!"  This process utilizes both words and images.  Participants will have a
workbook to use and keep.  No
  personal sharing will be required.

We'll also look at identity theft and how to be a good neighbor. There will be time for questions, comments, rumors, speculations, innuendos, snide remarks . . . anything you've always wanted to say to a cop but never got around to it (or were too afraid to say!).
MaryAnne will also take the opportunity for her own personal ranting - about safety, of course!

Women of all ages are encouraged to attend this event.

About the facilitator:
MaryAnne Thurber has been a law enforcement officer in Madison, Wisconsin for the past 29 years.  After graduating summa cum average from the University of Wisconsin, she climbed into a polyester blend blue ensemble (now a much nicer cotton and wool mix) and served as a police officer in a squad car, on motorcycle, on a bicycle and on foot.  She has worked undercover in narcotics and vice (making her mother very proud) and has served as the department's public information officer, crime prevention officer and safety education officer.  MaryAnne and her marginally disturbed dog live in a small, but tastefully appointed, pink house just outside of Madison, Wisconsin.
